Why Yoga At The Lab

Hi, hello, hey, what’s up y’all?! My name is Kennae Miller (she/her) and I am a new yoga teacher to both The Lab Training Studio and the Nashville area. I am trained as a CYT-1200, CEP, PRYT-1 as well as an Ayurvedic Counselor, Reiki Practitioner, Herbalist Apprentice and Yoga Therapist. My family and I recently moved from a small town in South Carolina where we steward family land and lived off-grid raising livestock, bees, growing food and more. Before living off-grid we lived outside of Charleston, SC where my husband and I retired from the Air Force as military Veterans and I owned the only Black yoga studio in South Carolina, Transformation Yoga. At my studio we centered yoga and meditation as tools for Black people that have been marginalized, undervalued and underrepresented to move towards healing and liberation by utilizing healing and transformative justice frameworks. Usually, when I am not teaching yoga, I am speaking, leading retreats, caregiving for my family and homeschooling the young people- if they don’t have me at a gymnastics meet or karate competition.

I think it is important for people to recognize Black people are not new to the ideas of healing, liberation, or community care as these have always been essential to our survival and ability to thrive. This is why I chose to bring my gifts and skills to The Lab Training Studio. Yoga at the Lab is not a fitness class but rather a place to collectively return to our bodies while connecting to our mind and soul. Each class is different and will provide invitations to breathe deeply, move the body, feel a vibe and even have fun because what is liberation without joy?!? Something I love about being a teacher at The Lab is, Courtney and H have created an atmosphere that feels more like a family meet up than a gym with individuals working on individual fitness goals. Walking through the doors inspires you to keep coming or show up no matter what level or experience you have and remind you that there are people rooting for you.

At this time, you can take classes with me at The Lab one Saturday a month at 11am, pre-registration is required by visiting www.thelabtrainingstudio.online. If you are looking for private one-on-one or private group sessions, you can connect with me by visiting www.Kennae.com to see if I am a good fit for what you are looking for.

Nutrition

D0A799C1-BCA2-467D-85D2-7B92A7955B65.jpeg

Hi there! I’m Kayla, Nutritionist and Memphis native living in Nashville, TN. I have over 8 years of nutrition education and counseling experience. I am extremely passionate about helping others ditch the diet rules and rediscover the joy of eating. My goal is to help my clients and readers heal their relationship with food and improve their physical and mental health with eating habits rooted in nourishment vs. deprivation.
Like most nutritionist, I used to think nutrition was all about “eating less” and “eating right.” I believed what I was taught about weight and health being one and the same. Those beliefs led me down a path where food and eating became stressful and complicated. As I started working with clients, I quickly realized my approach wasn’t helping. I saw how the focus on weight and rigid diet rules turned something that should be a simple, nourishing act of self-care, into an anxiety-filled chore.
Thankfully, I quickly realized that food is so much more than fuel, and that diet rules and rigidity weren’t the answer. I came to the realization that the purpose of pursuing health is to live a better quality of life, and if food and eating is feeling stressful, then it’s not actually helping with that goal. I saw how the fixation with the scale interferes with one’s ability to engage with health promoting behaviors. Not only that, but I learned how our cultural obsession with weight is fueling an epidemic of eating disorders and disordered eating. I began to see my role as a nutritionist as helping people nurture a healthy relationship with food and learn to make food choices from a place of nourishment, pleasure, and their own internal wisdom. With those realizations, I began to learn everything I could about intuitive and mindful eating and began to integrate these non-diet approaches into my practice and personal life.
Through compassionate, affirming, and client-centered care for all bodies, I want to help others redefine health and discover their own path to food peace.
